Active ingredient and dosage form

Penester - coated tablets:

1 tab. contains Finasteride 5 mg; 30 pieces per pack.

Mechanism of action

Drug for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Finasteride is a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound. Penester is a competitive and specific inhibitor of steroid 5-alpha reductase - an intracellular enzyme that turns testosterone into an active androgen 5-dihydrotestosterone. The growth of prostate tissue and the development of benign hyperplasia are due to the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone in the cells of the prostate gland. Under the influence of the drug, there is a significant decrease in the concentration of dihydrosterone in the blood plasma and in the gland tissue. Finasteride does not bind to androgen receptors.

As a result of the use of Penester, the size of the prostate gland decreases, the severity of symptoms associated with prostatic hyperplasia decreases.

Penester has no effect on plasma lipid concentration, as well as plasma levels of cortisol, estradiol, prolactin, thyroid stimulating hormone, thyroxin.

Indications and usage

- benign prostatic hyperplasia (to reduce the size of the prostate gland, increase the maximum rate of urine outflow and reduce the symptoms associated with hyperplasia, reduce the risk of acute urinary retention and the associated likelihood of surgical intervention).

Dosage and administration

Penester is prescribed by mouth for 5 mg 1 time / day, regardless of the meal.

The duration of therapy to assess its effectiveness should be at least 6 months.

Adverse reactions

On the part of the reproductive system: gynecomastia, breast tenderness, impotence, decreased libido and decreased volume of ejaculate.

Other: allergic reactions.

The frequency of side effects does not exceed 3-4% and decreases during treatment. In some cases, there was an increase in the concentration of luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormones and testosterone (approximately 10%), however, these figures remained within normal limits.

Contraindications

Before treatment, it is necessary to exclude diseases that can simulate benign prostatic hyperplasia, such as infectious prostatitis, prostate cancer, urethral stricture, bladder hypotension, and a number of changes in the urinary system arising from certain diseases of the nervous system.
