Lactulose is an indigestible β-glycosidic carbohydrate. Due to the lack of human enzymes is not hydrolyzed (not split) in the upper sections of the gastrointestinal tract.

Lactulose enters the colon in unchanged form, where it is broken down by the action of the colon flora (bifidobacteria and lactobacilli) with the formation of low molecular weight organic acids, which leads to a decrease in the pH of the intestinal contents.

Under the action of Lactusan, the absorption of ammonia by the colon and its excretion from the body is increased, the growth of acidophilic bacteria (including lactobacteria) is stimulated, reproduction of proteolytic bacteria is suppressed and the formation of nitrogen-containing toxic substances, which are secreted by proteolytic flora and play an important role in the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy, is reduced.

Indications and usage

Lactusan is indicated for:

- when correcting the effects of antibiotic therapy;

- with intestinal dysbacteriosis in adults and children of varying severity;

- in diseases of the liver of various etiologies;

- With chronic constipation in the elderly, children, pregnant women, as well as in patients with prolonged bed rest;

- with colitis and other diseases of the gastrointestinal tract;

- with salmonellosis and to protect against intestinal infections;

- in case of renal failure;

- in case of toxicosis of pregnant women with functional digestive disorders;

- in case of allergic reactions;

- to activate the immune system of the intestine.

Contraindications

- galactosemia;

- lactase deficiency;

Adverse reactions

In the first days of taking Lactusan, the appearance of flatulence is possible, which takes place within 3 days. Sometimes there is a laxative effect. Overdose may cause nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, which requires a dose adjustment of Lactusan. In the case of the use of higher doses for a long time in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy in a patient, electrolyte imbalance may develop as a result of diarrhea.
