Mechanism of action

Festal contains digestive pancreatic enzymes in a highly concentrated form. Facilitates the digestion of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, which leads to their more complete absorption in the small intestine. In diseases of the pancreas, Festal compensates for the insufficiency of its excretory function and contributes to the improvement of the digestive processes and the functional state of the gastrointestinal tract. Dragee has a protective shell that does not dissolve in the acidic contents of the stomach and, thus, protects the digestive enzymes from destruction under the action of gastric juice.

Indications and usage

- a feeling of fullness or flatulence caused by fatty or unusual food, overeating;
- digestive disorders associated with impaired chewing function, prolonged immobilization of the patient;
- Replacement therapy for exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.

Contraindications

- acute pancreatitis;
- chronic pancreatitis in the acute phase;
- intestinal obstruction;
- hypersensitivity to preparations containing digestive enzymes of animal origin.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

It is possible to use the drug during periods of pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding) if indicated.

Dosage and administration

The drug is prescribed for 2-3 pills during each meal. If necessary, the dose may be increased. The duration of treatment is determined individually.
Drops should be taken without chewing, drink with a small amount of liquid.

Adverse reactions

From the digestive tract: rarely, when taking high doses - diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain.
Allergic reactions: skin redness, sneezing, tearing.

Special notes

With caution, the drug is prescribed to patients with a history of chronic pancreatitis.
It should be borne in mind that with a high activity of lipase contained in Pancreatin, the likelihood of developing severe constipation in children increases.
In clinical practice, there have been cases of fibrous colonopathy in children with cystic fibrosis who received daily preparations containing high doses of pancreatin.
Digestive disorders can occur in patients with hypersensitivity to pancreatin, or in patients with meconium ileus or a history of bowel resection.
When using high doses of pancreatin in some cases, perianal irritation may occur.

Overdosage

Symptoms: increased levels of uric acid in the blood plasma and urine.
Treatment: symptomatic therapy.
