Nifuroxazide

Mode of application

Ercefuryl take inside. For adults or children over the age of 6 years.

Adults - 4 capsules / day (800 mg), divided into 2-4 doses.

Children over 6 years old - 3-4 capsules / day (600-800 mg), divided into 2-4 doses.

Duration of treatment is no more than 7 days.

Side effects

Allergic reactions such as skin rashes, hives, angioedema, or anaphylactic shock are rarely possible.

Indications

Acute bacterial diarrhea, occurring without deterioration of the general condition, fever, intoxication (in addition to the adequate severity of rehydration diarrhea by ingestion of fluids and electrolytes inside or, if necessary, their intravenous administration).

Use during pregnancy and lactation

In animal studies, nifuroxazide showed no teratogenic effect. However, as a precautionary measure, taking nifuroxazide during pregnancy is not recommended (insufficient clinical experience with pregnancy).

Lactation period. During the lactation period, it is possible to continue breastfeeding in the case of a short course of drug treatment.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to nitrofuran derivatives or any excipients of the drug;
• pregnancy;
• fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome or sucrase and isomaltase deficiency (due to the presence of sucrose in the formulation);
• children's age up to 6 years.

Composition

1 capsule contains:
active ingredient: nifuroxazide 200 mg;
excipients: sucrose 72 mg, Magnesium stearate 1.8 mg, corn starch 88 mg;
The composition of the shell of capsules: gelatin, titanium dioxide, iron oxide yellow.

Special notes

In the case of bacterial diarrhea with signs of systemic damage (worsening of the general condition, fever, symptoms of intoxication or infection), antibacterial drugs with good systemic diffusion should be used.

In the case of severe, prolonged diarrhea, severe vomiting, or refusal to eat, intravenous fluids and electrolytes should be considered for rehydration.

If the treatment of diarrhea persists for more than 2 days, you should review the treatment and consider the need to receive fluids and electrolytes by mouth or in / in the introduction. The volume of fluid injected and the method of its introduction (inside, in / in) should correspond to the severity of diarrhea, age and clinical condition of the patient.

Influence on the ability to drive a car or perform work that requires increased speed of physical and mental reactions. The drug does not affect the ability to drive vehicles or engage in other potentially hazardous activities.

Mechanism of action

Ercefuryl - intestinal antiseptic, antidiarrheal drug.

Like other nitrofurans, it blocks some redox enzyme reactions in microbial cells.

When used in therapeutic doses has a bacteriostatic effect, in high doses - bactericidal. Active against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Clostridium) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Klebsiela, Enterobacter, Vibrio cholerae, etc.) microorganisms. He affects the saprophytic flora (does not cause dysbiosis). The drug does not develop resistance of bacterial strains.

Pharmacokinetics

Nifuroxazide is practically not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, 99% of the dose taken remains in the intestine and exerts its antimicrobial effect there. Nifuroxazide is excreted by the intestines: 20% - unchanged, and the rest nifuroxazide - chemically modified.
