Guttalax drops 30ml

Mechanism of action

Laxative drug, a derivative of triarylmethane. Acts only at the level of the colon. The sulfate radical is cleaved from the sodium molecule of picosulfate due to the activity of sulfate-producing bacteria living in the large intestine, and the drug is converted into its active form, free diphenol. It stimulates the receptors of the mucous membrane of the colon and enhances its motility.
The laxative effect develops 6-12 hours after administration.

After ingestion of sodium, picosulfate is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and does not undergo hepato-intestinal circulation.
Minor amounts of diphenol are detected in the systemic circulation and in the urine. The relationship between the laxative effect of Guttalax and the concentration in the blood of active diphenol was not observed. In the large intestine, Guttalax passes into the active form - free diphenol.

Indications and usage

- constipation;
- hemorrhoids (in order to avoid painful defecation);
- anal fissure (to avoid painful bowel movements).

Selection of the optimal dose is carried out individually.
Adults and children over 10 years appoint 10-20 drops in the evening, children aged 4 to 10 years - 5-10 drops.
For severe and persistent constipation adults are recommended to dose up to 30 drops.

Adverse reactions

With long-term use of the drug in significantly higher doses of possible violations:
Fluid and electrolyte balance: loss of potassium and other electrolytes.
Gastrointestinal: rarely - dyspeptic symptoms, diarrhea.
With short-term use of the drug side effects are rarely observed.

Contraindications

- acute diseases of the abdominal organs, including requiring surgical intervention (intestinal obstruction, acute appendicitis);
- severe dehydration;
- Hypersensitivity to the drug and other triarylmethane derivatives.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

No negative effect of Guttalax on pregnancy and fetal development has been identified, however, it should be used during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, if the intended benefit to the mother exceeds the potential risk to the fetus.
Sodium picosulfate is not excreted in breast milk, but if necessary, use Guttalax during lactation should stop breastfeeding.
AT experimental studies not identified mutagenic and teratogenic effects of the drug.

Special notes

Guttalax should not be taken daily for a long time.
Use in pediatrics
In children, Guttalax is used only according to strict indications. Breast children prescribe the drug is impractical due to insufficient development of the sulfate-producing intestinal flora.

In studies conducted on laboratory animals, toxic and carcinogenic effects of the drug were not detected.

Overdosage

Symptoms: intestinal colic, diarrhea, clinically significant loss of potassium and other electrolytes.

Drug Interactions

With the simultaneous use of Guttalax in high doses and diuretics or corticosteroids may increase the risk of electrolyte disorders.
An electrolyte imbalance that occurs while taking high doses of Guttalax can lead to a deterioration in the tolerability of cardiac glycosides.
Simultaneous administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics can reduce the laxative effect of Guttalax.

Storage conditions

The drug should be stored at a temperature above 30 ° C; do not freeze. Shelf life - 5 years.
