Mechanism of action

MALTOFER FOL - antianemic action. The macromolecular complex is stable and does not release iron in the form of free ions in the gastrointestinal tract. The structure of Maltofer® is similar to the natural iron compound ferritin. Due to this similarity, iron (III) enters the blood from the intestine through active transport. The absorbed iron binds to ferritin and is stored in the body, mainly in the liver. Then, in the bone marrow, it is incorporated into the hemoglobin. Iron, which is a part of the polymaltose complex of iron (III) hydroxide, does not possess prooxidant properties, unlike simple iron salts. There is a correlation between the severity of iron deficiency and the level of its absorption (the greater the severity of iron deficiency, the better the absorption). The most active process of absorption occurs in the duodenum and small intestine. Maltofer® preparations do not cause staining of tooth enamel.

Indications and usage

- Latent iron deficiency and clinically pronounced iron deficiency (iron deficiency anemia).
- Prevention of iron deficiency in women during pregnancy, breastfeeding, in the childbearing period, in children, including in adolescence, in adults (for example, vegetarians and the elderly).

Contraindications

- Iron overload (for example, hemosiderosis and hemochromatosis).
- Violation of iron utilization (lead anemia, sideroachrestic anemia).
- Non-iron deficiency anemia (hemolytic, megaloblastic, caused by a lack of vitamin B 12).

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

In controlled studies in pregnant women after the first trimester of pregnancy, no adverse effects on the mother and fetus were observed. Negative effects of the drug on the fetus during the first trimester of pregnancy were not detected.

Dosage and administration

Inside, during or immediately after a meal (drops, solution and syrup - mixing with fruit, vegetable juices or soft drinks, pills - chewing or swallowing whole). The daily dose of the drug depends on the degree of iron deficiency.

Table 1. Daily doses of the drug Maltofer.

* Due to the necessity of administering very small doses, according to these indications, it is recommended to use the drug Maltofer® drops for oral administration.

** In connection with the necessity of prescribing small doses, according to these indications, it is recommended to use the drug Maltofer® drops for oral administration or Maltofer® syrup.

The duration of treatment of clinically pronounced iron deficiency (iron deficiency anemia) is 3-5 months to normalize hemoglobin levels. After that, taking the drug should be continued in the dosage for the treatment of latent iron deficiency for a few more months, and for pregnant women, at least before delivery, to restore iron stores.

The duration of treatment of latent iron deficiency is 1–2 months.

In the case of clinically severe iron deficiency, the normalization of hemoglobin level and the replenishment of iron reserves occurs only 2-3 months after the start of treatment.

Adverse reactions

- On the part of the digestive tract organs. Very rarely (? 0.001% and less than 0.01%) - a feeling of overflow, pressure in the epigastric region, nausea, constipation or diarrhea; perhaps dark staining of feces, due to the release of non-absorbed iron, which has no clinical significance.

Special notes

Diabetic Notice: One pill contains 0.04 bread units. No adverse effects on the fetus during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Overdosage

In cases of overdose of the drug, no signs of intoxication or signs of excessive iron intake have been described so far.

Storage conditions
