Mechanism of action

Mucolytic agent with expectorant action. Reduces the viscosity of the bronchial secretion due to the depolarization of acidic polysaccharides of the discharge of the bronchi and stimulation of secretory cells of the bronchial mucosa, producing a secret containing neutral polysaccharides. Bromhexine is believed to contribute to the formation of surfactant.

Diseases of the respiratory tract, accompanied by the formation of a viscous secretion difficult to separate: tracheobronchitis, chronic bronchitis with a broncho-obstructive component, bronchial asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic pneumonia.

With gastric ulcer, as well as indications of a history of gastric bleeding, Bromhexine should be used under the supervision of a physician. Bromhexine is not used concurrently with drugs containing codeine, as this makes coughing of liquefied sputum difficult.
In children, treatment should be combined with postural drainage and vibration massage of the chest, facilitating the outflow of secretions from the bronchi.
During pregnancy, Bromhexine is used in cases where the intended benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.
Bromhexine is not compatible with alkaline solutions.
