Mechanism of action

GLIFORMIN enhances glucose utilization by the muscles, retards the absorption of carbohydrates in the intestines, inhibits gluconeogenesis in the liver, and also increases the insulin sensitivity of the tissues of the body. The drug reduces the content of triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood serum, reduces appetite and leads to a decrease in body weight.

Indications and usage

Type II diabetes mellitus (especially in obese patients), in case of failure of sulfonylurea drugs;
Type I diabetes (as a supplement to insulin therapy).

Contraindications

Diabetic coma, ketoacidosis, lactic acidosis, or an indication of it in history;
Severe liver and / or kidney function;
Cardiac and / or respiratory failure;
Acute myocardial infarction phase;
Extensive operations and injuries;
Infectious diseases;
Pregnancy, lactation;
Hypersensitivity to biguanides.

Dosage and administration

Gliformin taken orally during or immediately after a meal. Treatment begins with a single dose of 1-2 tab. drug in the morning. In the future, if necessary, the dose of the drug is gradually increased to 2-3 tab. 2-3 times a day.
For maintenance treatment Gliformin is usually used in a dose of 1-2 tab. 2-3 times a day.

Adverse Effects

Possible: metallic taste in the mouth, loss of appetite, nausea, allergic reactions, symptoms of lactate acidosis.
Prolonged use of the drug may lead to impaired absorption of vitamin B12.
In case of side effects, it is recommended to reduce the dose of the drug or temporarily cancel it.

Special notes

It is not recommended the appointment of Gliformin in acute infections, exacerbations of chronic infectious and inflammatory diseases, injuries, acute surgical diseases, the risk of dehydration. The drug is not used before surgery and for 2 days after their implementation. It is not recommended to prescribe the drug to patients over 60 years old who perform hard physical work, which is associated with an increased risk of developing lactic acidosis.
Gliformin reduces blood sugar levels only in patients with diabetes mellitus and does not show such an effect in healthy individuals.

Drug Interactions

In the combined use of Gliformin with sulfonylurea derivatives, insulin and salicylates, potentiation of the hypoglycemic action occurs.
With the simultaneous use of Gliformin with ethanol-containing drugs may cause lactic acidosis.
