Mechanism of action

Monophasic contraceptive drug for oral administration. The mechanism of action is based on the inhibition of the gonadotropic function of the pituitary, the suppression of follicle development and the disruption of the ovulation process. The contraceptive effect is enhanced by the impact on the cervical mucus, which makes it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus, as well as changes in the endometrium that prevent the egg cell from forming. The drug causes regular bleeding that mimic normal menstruation.

- migraine with focal neurological symptoms;
- hypersensitivity to the drug.
The drug is not prescribed to smoking women over 35 years old.

Dosage and administration

Assign the drug from the first day of menstruation on 1 tab. at the same time for 21 days, followed by a 7-day break, during which the drug is not taken. At this time, menstrual bleeding should occur. Acceptance of each next pack should begin after the 7-day break in taking pills.
After abortion taking the drug is recommended to start on the same day.
After childbirth The drug can be taken in 21 days if the woman is not breastfeeding.If a woman starts taking the drug later than the 28th day after delivery, it is necessary to exclude pregnancy and use an additional barrier method of contraception for 7 days.

Adverse reactions

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Mercilon is contraindicated for use in pregnancy.
Estrogen / progestogen oral contraceptives can affect the quality and quantity of breast milk. In addition, small amounts of active substances can be excreted in breast milk.
In case of accidental use of combined hormonal contraceptives in the early stages of pregnancy, no teratogenic effect on the fetus was detected.

Special notes

During the use of the drug, a medical examination is indicated at least once a year.
Millsilon is prescribed with caution at high risk of thrombosis, signs of heart failure, valvular heart disease, atrial fibrillation, hypertension, epilepsy, migraine, Crohn's disease, sickle cell anemia.
Smokers over the age of 35 should stop smoking if they intend to use Mercilon for contraception.
In patients with significantly pronounced varicose veins, one should carefully weigh the benefits of pregnancy protection with Mercilon and the risk of side effects as a result of its use.
The drug may increase the risk of thrombosis in patients undergoing surgery and prolonged immobilization.
In women with tumor-like formations in the abdominal cavity and acute abdominal pain, hepatocellular adenoma should be excluded.
Patients who have chloasma, when using the drug should avoid exposure to the sun.
The effectiveness of Mercilon may be reduced if you miss his reception, as well as with diarrhea or vomiting that occurred in the first 4 hours after taking the drug.

Overdosage

The toxicity of both ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel is extremely low, so the likelihood of symptoms of overdose of Mercilon is low. In case of accidental ingestion of several pills of the drug, such the symptomslike nausea, vomiting, and in girls - slight bloody discharge from the vagina.
Treatment: conduct symptomatic therapy.

Drug Interactions

Efficacy of Mercilon decreases with concomitant use with rifampicin, barbiturates, phenylbutazone, sodium phenytoin, Carbamazepine, Activated carbon, laxatives, and, possibly, Griseofulvin, ampicillin, and tetracyclines.
